What kind of videogame will Starfield be?
I know nothing of it.

-fox
Bethesda.

So it'll feel like Fo4 or Skyrim most likely.
Shooty Looty, with a shit ton of side quests that have zero impact upon the world.

Well... it might NOT be, but, lets be honest. Betheda don't have original thoughts.

Tod Howard is claiming it will be Skyrim in space.

Now, Tod is very unreliable when it comes to hype, so lots of salt with whatever he says.

Something else to remember is that each Bethesda game has been more "streamlined" with every release. Pretty much meaning it's been dumbed down for mass appeal.

Fall Out 4 was when I checked out, it was a shooter more than anything else. Meh.

Still can't believe we got until 2023 before we have any chance of seeing the next Elder Scrolls. It's nice that they made a new engine because the Creation Engine was pushed WAY past it's limits already. I fear it will be nothing what the previous games have been though.

I disagree that it's dumbing it down. They had a LOT of issues with the complexity of the systems in Oblivion, things that made the game unplayable in some situations.
Reducing that makes it easier to explain, and easier to just go with.

While stats seem like a great idea, do they actually matter?
Oblivion showed that, once you swapped to player skills dictating hits, the only things that mattered were Health, Stamina, and Magicka.
Which is, incidentally, exactly what it was reduced to.

The overhaul of the skills/perks system is a significant improvement in my eyes, as makes builds that are vastly more interesting.
But they didn't add enough individual items to each tree.

Should have been full trees, with a half dozen branches, and selecting some should prevent others from being selected.
But that'd get hard to define, and require a bunch of interesting things that the devs obviously were already struggling with coming up with.

... You didn't pay attention.
This isn't a 'new' engine.
Just like Creation wasn't.

It's all just a new extension of the Gamebryo engine. More stuff added, more changes included. Deeper fixes and alterations.

But, at it's core, it'll still feel like another gamebryo engine game.

I agree with your take on Oblivion's systems. It's more of a fault of them not actually putting real effort into making the complexity fun for the player rather than the complexity it self.

Skyrim had a similar issue, but with just much less complexity. It's as if they put zero effort into putting thought into the skill trees.

They presented it as if they have scrapped the old engine. I know it old creation/gamebryo engine is hurting bad. I dabbled a bit into modding and couldn't believe how half arsed everything seemed to be. Things would just not work for no apparent reason or fail randomly without any cause. Any discussion with other modders would require the use of the phrase "due to a bug in the creation engine" about a half dozen times within an hour.

Hopefully they didn't try to further Frankenstein the engine for modern games, but it wouldn't surprise me if they are.

They present this, but while they may have done some rather large overhauls. They aren't about to scrap two decades of programming experience and value.

It's why Unreal 5 is an overhauled Unreal 4, which is an overhauled Unreal 3... and so on down.

IDTech is the same thing (although I suspect their overhauls are a little more major, as ID are very much engine programmers who made demos with demons)

Not sure if anyone has been following Star Field, but it certainly has more of a Limit Theory feel, if Limit Theory was being made by a big AAA studio than I expected.

A 1000 planets, but mostly empty ones...

Sounds bad, BUT the idea is it leave room for mod'ers to do their thing.
You can also build outposts anywhere (within limits I am sure), so could be cool.

Build you own ship, hire crew.

This sounds cool. It appears you can build research labs and research new.... "things"... and it looks like you can hire crew to do this. I wonder what else? I expect it will be underwhelming at first, but mod'ers will expand on it?

Space battles...

I so wasn't expecting this. It doesn't look jaw dropping, but the fact that it's in the game is interesting. It is said you can disable and board ships, and capture them. I wonder if you can crew other ships and have your own fleet?
I suspect, like everything else, it's going to start just "ok", but allow mod'ers to build on it.

Overall I find it interesting that Star Field is based around mod'ers making the game better. It's also WAY more open than I expected. Though with a year till release who knows what we will end up with.

Anyways, wondered what the Limit Theory people thought because there seems to be some overlap to what Josh was building towards.
